How We Started

Goal Hounds Soccer Club began with a simple but powerful vision: to provide a welcoming environment where young players could discover the joys of soccer and build a strong foundation for future success.

We started as a grassroots club dedicated to teaching the basics of the game, focusing on fundamental skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

We have expanded into a vibrant community, offering programs for various skill levels in both North Saanich and Oak Bay. We’re especially excited about our recently launched Goalie Program, available once per season for aspiring goalkeepers!

Our Aim

The club was founded by our president, James Sterling, who, having grown up playing soccer, recognized a gap in the community after relocating to Victoria with his wife and three children. Seeing the need for a club that offered a pressure-free environment for kids who had no prior experience playing soccer, he established Goal Hounds.

Our structured approach allows young players to start with fundamental skill building and advance through intermediate levels, preparing them for more competitive play or school sports, based on their individual aspirations. Our coaches, including the president, share a close-knit, family-like bond that brings warmth and unity to our club.

Despite our growth, we’ve maintained a friendly, small-town atmosphere where everyone knows each other and feels like part of the community.

Our club's vision extends beyond soccer skills to fostering meaningful friendships and community connections. We’ve seen players form lasting bonds and become more engaged in their local community through our programs. By hosting several optional weekend tournaments, we offer players a taste of competitive play in a round-robin format, enhancing their experience and sense of achievement.

Additionally, our commitment to development is evident as some of our players have pursued further growth by becoming assistant coaches after participating in a Local Coaching Program offered at another soccer club. This holistic approach ensures that our club remains a dynamic and supportive environment for growth both on and off the field.

We also encourage kids to set and record their own personal goals and work each week towards achieving them. Goal setting further enhances their confidence and commitment while teaching them the value of objective planning.

Skill Advancement

As players progress, they have the opportunity to move into intermediate levels, where the focus shifts to refining their technical skills and deepening their understanding of the game. At this stage, players engage in more advanced drills and strategies, honing their abilities through targeted practice and in-game scenarios.

This progression helps them develop a more sophisticated grasp of tactics and teamwork, preparing them for more competitive play and higher levels of skill development.

Path to Excellence

Ultimately, our program equips players with the skills needed to excel in competitive clubs or school sports, depending on their personal goals. By offering comprehensive training and progression opportunities, we help each player achieve their full potential.

Our curriculum includes advanced drills, tactical instruction, and game analysis to ensure players not only develop technical abilities but also understand the strategic aspects of soccer.
